« La Suisse » at the dock in 2026 and 2027: 500,000 francs for 2028

The decision has been made: the steamship La Suisse It will not sail in 2026 or 2027. A wear crack detected on a support of its engine necessitates extensive repairs. To enable its return to sailing in 2028, the ABVL is launching a fundraising appeal and needs to raise 500,000 francs.

A crack discovered in the summer of 2025

The flagship of the CGN's Belle Époque fleet has been out of service since June 2025, following the discovery of a crack in a support for the high-pressure cylinder of its steam engine. This wear and tear is not surprising for a ship that has sailed intensively for over a century.

The in-depth examinations carried out during the autumn of 2025 allowed for an analysis of the source of the problem. The CGN's technical department is now able to repair the vessel so that it can continue to operate for another ten years or so, before its next major overhaul. Furthermore, plans are in place for dry docking next autumn in the CGN's dry dock, where the vessel will be sandblasted and the hull inspected.

Three large Belle Époque vessels will be docked in 2026

The year 2026 will be special for fans of the historic fleet: in addition La Suisse temporarily out of service, the Simplon and the Helvétie They too will remain on the dock, awaiting a complete renovation.

500,000 francs to allow a return in 2028

The recommissioning of La Suisse The 2028 budget depends entirely on funding for the necessary work on the aircraft. However, this work is not included in the 2026 fleet maintenance budget. The cost of the repairs amounts to 500,000 francs, a sum which the CGN does not have.

The ABVL has committed to raising this sum so that the CGN can begin repairs as soon as possible. As soon as the funding is secured, the work can start. Everyone's contribution is essential now.
